Jose Rizal University was originally established by Don Vicente Fabella as Far Eastern College in 1919, its name was changed to Jose
Rizal College in 1922. First located at Arlegui Street, the College
transferred to R. Hidalgo Street soon afterwards, moving to its
present location in Mandaluyong in 1949. It remained closed
throughout the Japanese Occupation, as its head had joined the
guerilla movement. Don Vincente Fabella was the first Filipino to
obtain a Certificate in Public Accountancy from the United States
making as the First Filipino Certified Public Accountant.
Originally offering commerce and high school degrees, the College
expanded its offerings to include an elementary school, education
and liberal arts at the undergraduate level, and law, business
administration, public administration, and education at the graduate
level. It has its own research publication, the Journal of Business,
Education and Law. The College is especially proud of Ramon
Magsaysay who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1933 and who
subsequently became the 7th President of the Philippines.
The College obtained Level III accreditation from the PACU-COA in
November 1999, and was granted university status by the Commission
on Higher Education (CHED) on October 2, 2000.
