Objectives
The Elementary School was established
with the primary objectives of (1) developing the basic
skills of communication and rational thought, (2)
acquiring functional understanding of mathematical
skills and scientific concepts, (3) inculcating
desirable habits, attitudes, and ideals of democratic
citizenship, and (4) instilling love of God and of the
Filipino nation. Elementary education is legally
compulsory for all Filipinos of school age, and
represents the first phase of basic education, the next
being provided by high school.
In addition, the Elementary school places
particular emphasis upon developing both familiarity and
facility with the English language as quickly as
possible, and certain basic desirable virtues which
appear to be most effectively provided by the school,
rather than the family or the church.

Grades 5 & 6
The
Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) prescribed by the
Department of Education (DepEd) is being implemented of
Jose Rizal University (JRU) modified to suit its own
educational policies. Since JRU has obtained a
deregulated status it is allowed to develop and offer
its own elementary school curricula including sequence,
content and coverage as well as a choice in the
preferred language of instruction. In terms of the
number of contact hours, the JRU Curriculum offers more
compared to the DepEd's Basic Education Curriculum.
The
JRU Elementary School Curriculum meets the national
requirements but is further strengthened to enhance
instruction reflective of the knowledge, skills and
attitudes suited to the ever-changing needs of pupils
and society.
The
Elementary School places great emphasis on the
importance of the English language, and had taken steps
to emphasize this particular subject skill. The number
of contact hours of English subject in all grade levels
is given more minutes. From 80 minutes, English subject
of Grades I to II has been increased to 120 minutes,
while Grades IV to VI is 100 minutes per day effective
school year 2003-2004.
In
addition, English will be used as the medium of
instructions in Social Studies for all grade levels. It
is the University's belief that an early and complete
familiarity with the English language is critical to a
more effective social and economic role of the child
upon maturity.
Furthermore, additional emphasis is also given to
Mathematics and Science subjects, as these represent,
together with English, the core of the Elementary School
Curriculum.
The
contents of Good Manners and Right Conduct have been
especially suited to the needs of the elementary pupils,
and takes into consideration those values which are best
handled by the school, as contrasted with those which
may be better undertaken by the parents and by religious
authorities.

Kindergarten
The
Kindergarten class answers the needs of parents with
intelligent children who may still be too young to be
enrolled in Grade I, yet capable of participating and
developing early learning potential under supervised
activity. Kindergarten also introduces the child to
social interaction with children of the same age, and
eases the transition into more formal education in Grade
I.
The
medium of instruction for the kindergarten class is
primarily English, with the Filipino language utilized
as an auxiliary medium. Kindergarten pupils are required
to wear the same uniforms as those worn by the
elementary pupils in Grades I to IV.

Student Activities
In
the Elementary School, teachers encourage pupils to
participate in various school activities to maximize
their potentials and abilities. Co-curricular activities
are planned to build the pupil's self-confidence and
self-esteem.
Elementary School Clubs
The
group is composed of selected pupils from the
intermediate grades. It aims to develop and master
skills that will enable each member to cope with changes
in their physical environment and to find relevance in
what they can discover from their own experiences with
things around them. The club is sponsoring the "Battle
of the Young Rizalians" - a quiz bee like contest for
grades IV, V and VI pupils who excel in Science,
Mathematics and Civics and Culture.
Pupils
are encouraged to develop their communication skills
through these organizations. The training method
includes group dynamics, discussions, etc. Both clubs
are sponsoring different contests such as declamation,
spelling, story telling, essay writing and comprehension
skills.
Good
citizenship training starts in the elementary level.
Through this organization, pupils become aware of the
need for socialization. One must know himself and the
world around him to be able to live meaningfully. The
club is co-sponsoring the "Battle of the Young
Rizalians".
Pupils
with special talent in the field of arts like acting,
drawing or painting are given opportunities to further
enrich their special skills by exposing them to various
training, activities and competitions in and outside the
school. They are encouraged to join other club
activities to create an integrated exercise of pupils'
potentials.
Elementary school pupils who love music are trained to
become members of (1) Blue & Gold Pipers - the group of
young bamboo flutists, and (2) Blue & Gold Choir - the
group of young boys and girls representing the JRU ES
chorale. The clubs seek to promote self-realization,
raise cultural awareness and develop interpersonal
relationship among its members through the realm of
music. The groups perform in different programs and
activities in the entire school community.
The
club aims to build a Christ-centered community among the
young members of the school wherein Christian values are
learned, lived and shared among themselves and with
other people outside the school campus, thus helping
them prepare for their future tasks as Christian
leaders.
Field Trips
To
supplement classroom work, actual field excursions and
visits to various places of historical and cultural
significance are undertaken during the year. Such trips
are made under the full supervision of faculty, with the
written permission of parents.
Student Publications
The
Elementary School publishes a student organ, The
Rizalette, managed by its staff composed of
selected elementary school pupils and advisers. The
newsletter encourages and provides opportunities to all
young children to develop basic skills of communication
through journalism. It aims to strengthen the
partnership between school, home and community it serves
through regular dissemination of information regarding
the achievement of pupils, and the important activities
held in the entire school community.
Scouting Movement
JRU
is an active member of the Boy and Girl Scouts of the
Philippines. In the Elementary School, there is one
recognized troop of Service Scouts and five kawans of
Kab Scouts. Boys from six to nine years old are
encouraged to join the Kab Scouts; boys from ten to
twelve years old may join the Service Scouts. Girls from
six to nine years old are encouraged to join the Stars;
girls from ten to twelve years old may participate in
the Girl Scouts.
Annual in-door and out-door camping under the
supervision of responsible scoutmaster-faculty members
highlight the scouts' activities. Boy and girl scouts
participate actively in the University community
programs.
First Communion
Pupils of the Roman Catholic faith may be prepared for
the First Holy Communion, at the indication of the
parents upon enrolling the child.
Intramural Games
The
value of sportsmanship is inculcated and strengthened
among the elementary school pupils through various
athletic held every year on top of its curricular
offerings in Physical Education subjects. They are given
significant challenges to practice their knowledge of
the importance of physical health and emotional
stability, teamwork and collaboration to achieve their
goals.
